Dead Horse Cliffs

It was the start of the Moab Plein Air competition, and a government shutdown closed the parks. The only Canyonlands Park people could see was from the Dead Horse State Park. This proved too crowded for me, no matter how far I walked from parking areas. Instead, I drove towards the closed park. Finding little traffic where there would normally be a stream of cars, I parked at the edge of the road near the entrance to Island in the Sky and found this wonderful view of the brilliant red cliffs of Dead Horse State Park in front of the La Sal Mountains. This painting received an Honorable Mention at the Moab Plein Air Festival.
